The first one doesn't matter.

Film & Scale #2:
The first one doesn't matter. Consistency does.

Perfectionism is a curse, not a blessing.

If you're like me, you put a lot of pressure on yourself to be perfect from the beginning.

It makes you procrastinate on what you should be shipping and sharing, but you keep waiting until you finish EVERY aspect of EVERY detail before telling anyone about it.

I've been doing it with this newsletter, my new editing subscription service (which I haven't shared publicly online yet even though the website is 100% operational and I have already had people sign up), and my podcast re-launch happening next week.

I tend to just wait and work and fiddle with and procrastinate some more and fine tune and wait and so on. So days, weeks, and months go by with all this work I've done just sitting alone on my computer with nothing shared online about it.

I don't know why I still do this.

If I learned anything from launching SwitchPod on Kickstarter to raise over $400,000, it was that building in public is powerful.

Pat Flynn and I shared the process of creating the tripod on our YouTube channels and took prototypes to conferences to get feedback from people like Casey Neistat and Peter McKinnon. (Yes, I'm bragging, but we also kept that feedback & interaction private and just implemented what they said ASAP.)

So why don't I work 100% in public now, showing everything I'm doing all the time?

Because I always want my first impression to be perfect.

Just like as a teen, I always wanted to say the perfect joke to impress a girl (because then she would laugh, we'd go to prom together, and probably get married or something). SO MUCH PRESSURE ON MYSELF.

But instead of saying the perfect thing, I just said nothing. The girl moved on, and I slumped off to walk home with my head down like Charlie Brown.

What does this all have to do with you and making videos for the internet?

I'm glad you asked!

Shoot your shot. Send that first email. Post that next video. Record and release something without even editing it.

You only make the shots you take.

So start taking more shots.

(By which I mean release more videos, not drink more tequila.)

And the first one you release doesn't even matter.

What matters is the consistency.

You don't become a professional by just doing something once and getting showered with praise, prestige, and money.

You have to work at something, for a long time, to get world class at it.

LeBron James has taken almost 30,000 shots during NBA games.

Now add how many he has taken while practicing as a pro. Or as a high schooler. Or as a nine year old.

Taking millions of basketball shots has made him one of the best basketball players ever.

What if he just waited until he had "the right shoes" or watched all the best courses on how to shoot a basketball?

We wouldn't know his name. But we do. Because he showed up and put in the work.

“I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately, I am inspired at 9 o’clock every morning.” - William Faulkner

I'm doing the same with this email.

It is Friday, so I wrote and am sending you an email.

What are you waiting for?

Cheers,
Caleb Wojcik

My podcast is back soon

Next week I'm re-launching my podcast and I'm going to call it Couch to $500K. I'll share more next week when it launches about why I'm calling it that, who it's for, and what I hope to share on it, but I wanted to tease the artwork in this email because I spent way too many hours this week creating it in Midjourney. I might make a separate video all about what I learned using AI to make podcast artwork too. That's enough about the show for now. More to come next week.

Featured Creator

Jack Conte's interview series Digital Spaghetti

One creator I'm enjoying right now is Jack Conte (the founder of Patreon). He has a fairly new interview series called Digital Spaghetti. He sits with a creator and breaks down how they make their videos. These are a "much watch" for anyone making video content online these days. My favorites were with Casey Neistat and Ryan Ng.
